CHAPTER 29 - TY

Ty Harper watched a woman he didn’t know move away from Kyra Blackwood and the other people in the living room and hurry toward the kitchen. She had the purposeful look and walk of a police officer. A detective? No doubt she was here to interview the catering staff and to ask if anyone knew anything about what Kyra had found in the attic last night.

He wished he knew what that was, wished he’d seen it. But then, probably better that he had not. It might have been a trigger, and he didn’t need to have one of his episodes this weekend. No one here had any idea what he suffered from. No idea that he was NOT a raffle winner, that he was a substitute, a stand-in for a buddy who knew that Ty had an interest in this mansion and knew the history of the family and the house.

Jerry knew Ty’s history, and so did Ty’s ex-wife, Darcy. He’d not told anyone else. But then, he didn’t talk much to anyone anymore. He wouldn’t speak of that history to anyone ever again. There was no need.

The craziest thing about this weekend was his interest in Kyra. There was something about her. She had secrets like he did, and she had an intensity about her, a purpose. He saw it in her eyes. But he doubted either of them would ever know the other’s secret. He wouldn’t talk, and she wouldn’t talk. Surface banter was all he’d get from Kyra. That was all he’d given and gotten from just about everybody but Jerry, and years ago, Darcy.

So much of his memory was mush. The army shrink had tried to help him retrieve his memories when he returned from the Middle East, but after a little bit of prodding, he’d stopped going to the sessions. He did his best not to put himself in certain situations that would trigger his PTSD. He usually succeeded. The attic had almost triggered an episode yesterday afternoon. He didn’t intend to go up there again.

Viewing a body or a brutal crime might also be a trigger. He kept his eyes open and scanned the living room. Nothing scary here. Nice furniture, pleasing walls painted blue. Heavy fringed drapes on wide sparkling windows, a beautiful fireplace with a white marble mantle. Expensive. Beautiful. Calming.

Zia had let him into the house after his arrival yesterday without even checking his ID. He and Jerry Newcomb resembled one another in height, weight, and coloring. Jerry had even lent him his driver’s license in case there was any kind of formal process of identification.

No one had checked for Jerry’s name on the winners’ roster.

He thought about insinuating himself into the investigation into what Kyra had found, but he no longer had his credentials. He wasn’t police and never would be again if he couldn’t get his head on straight.

Ty wandered over to the bar and ordered a cola. The bartender smiled at him. He’d changed clothes into a new golf shirt, sports jacket, and slacks.
